Prepared This Place For You

from Silver Linings by Ryan Oyer

/

about

I wrote this song when my Grandma Schwanz passed away.
My Aunt Marilyn and my Mom remembered things from their childhood to help me finish the lyrics. When I was young it was my impression that my Grandpa always “Prepared” the house for visitors. The driveway was in the middle of the woods but always seemed to be completely clean from debris. So I wrote this song from his perspective, waiting on her to arrive in heaven. It begins with an old tune called “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” which my Grandma would sing to him while they danced in the living room.

lyrics

I took a walk into the woods
Just me & God & with every step I took
I thought about you all the while
& I can still see your sweet smile

I blew the leaves off of the driveway
I heard that you were coming soon
Sat myself down to read the papers
‘Cause I've prepared this place for you

I thought my heart was full long before you arrived
No heavens treasure that beats having you by my side
the missing piece that fits the hole that I never knew
I have prepared this place for you

Three swans go flying past my window
They trumpet out the sweetest song
a melody that I may remember
So happy you have come along

So come and sing let me call you Sweetheart
Gather round the children neath our feet
We can dance like everyone is watching
Have this dance for all eternity

I thought my heart was full long before you arrived
No heavens treasure that beats having you by my side
the missing piece that fits the hole that I never knew
I have prepared this place for you

I thought my heart was full long before you arrived
No heavens treasure that beats having you by my side
the missing piece that fits the hole that I never knew
I have prepared this place for you
I still do, it’s true
I have prepared this place for you
